Estimation
There is little material specifically targeted at Estimation. It is an ongoing
skill that is applied across the year to all calculations, and rightly so.
Occasionally though you may need to spend more time on the skill.
Four-in-a-Row (Estimation) is a game where pupils match a number on the
grid to an estimate they have made from multiplying two numbers together.
Pupils will apply different strategies to get their estimates closer and closer
to the real answer. As the game progresses, and more estimates have been made
and checked, their estimating skills should be enhanced. It could also be used
as a game to focus on long multiplication. Pupils first select their two
numbers (some estimating needed), work out their answer on paper and check it
on a calculator, before placing their counter. They can only place their
counter if their calculation is correct.
Cricket (Estimation) is, again, a game based on estimating
multiplication. This time 2 and 3 digit numbers are being multiplied. Pupils
set each other the sums, eleven in total representing each batsman in the team.
The difference between the estimate and the actual answer is the batsman's
score. Each batsman has a score and the winner is the one with the lowest total
score. The One Day rules can be used as a lesson starter. It is possible to
have a six a side 'thrash about' tournament, where everyone plays everyone else
on a table.
As the game encourages accurate estimation, pupils will develop increasingly
sophisticated estimating techniques. An important aspect of this type of lesson
is to share good practise and then give pupils time to try out these new ideas.
Highlighting good techniques throughout the lesson should be encouraged.
