Shape and Space 2.
Shape and space is a favourite source of display work. Two of the beneficial
aspects of display work are
1). pupils have the chance to experiment with shape whilst consolidating skills
given,
2). pupils feel valued (and their working environment improved) by having their
work displayed.
How to make Tessellating Shapes is a simple sheet that can be started on
squared paper ( 5 x 5 cm) and then drawn on card. Follow the simple
instructions to create your own tessellating shape. (What is the area of your
new shape?) Pupils can extend this to rectangles and other polygons. Will it
work for equilateral triangles or does it need modifications? What about
hexagons? What about other tessellating shapes such as a Greek Cross? Every
library has a book by M.C. Escher, the Dutch graphic artist. Can pupils produce
any thing similar?
Paper Puzzles is a worksheet containing 4 traditional puzzles. Pupils can copy
them onto squared paper and try to solve them. The common theme throughout is
the conservation of area. If a shape is cut into pieces and rearranged, without
overlapping, it will have the same area. The areas can be found by counting
squares. When question 1 is rearranged into a square what is its area? Let's
introduce estimation! When the new square is made we can still see the 1cm
squares. These can be counted and use the "bigger than ½" method for around the
edge. The estimate can be compared to the area of the cross by counting squares
to see its accuracy. This leads nicely into approximating irregular areas
(drawing around a hand etc). As an aside, one of the best displays I have seen
was based on irregular areas. Stick a large piece of squared paper on a wall.
Seat a pupil, side on, between the wall and an overhead projector. The OHP
casts an excellent silhouette of the pupil. Draw around the shadow. Pupils can
the find the area of the shadow found. Even the most artistically challenged of
us can manage it and the effects mounted on a wall are brilliant. Your own
Rogues Gallery. One warning - don't try this with a class of 30!!
