Repeated Addition.
Trying to introduce ways of making the necessary function of repetitive
practice fun is essential in schools. For the low ability child who has to
repeatedly return to basic number topics at approximately the same level it is
important to keep the topics fresh and alive. The sheets shown here don't sit
in isolation, but form part of a structured curriculum. Hence the levels quoted
could be targeted for extension material or refresher work for a previous level
depending on the child's ability.
The best way to disguise a repeated function is in the form of a puzzle or
game. This way pupils are intent on winning and the calculations involved are
distanced from the eventual goal. Although little may be put down on paper, far
more work is achieved with some groups than with a traditional exercise whilst
supporting the Numeracy Strategy drive within schools.
Triangles is a worksheet based on a puzzle found in most puzzle books. It
involves lots of repeated addition if the puzzles are to be solved correctly.
Those pupils who need something a little more concrete to mentally hold on to
can cut out the squares of numbers and move them about on their puzzle board.
It has even been used as a top up homework sheet,- glued in the back of a book
and if the homework is "light" solve e). and f). etc..
Boxes. Dice Games. was a firm favourite with a low ability group Year 11 class
I had on a Friday afternoon. The combinations of different types of games you
can make up are unbelievable and the introduction of different polyhedra dice
extends the options further. It was set up with a (squash) ladder to keep track
of results and kept the class on task throughout the week!
