10ticks Newsletter June 2006

Welcome to the June Newsletter 2006

New Look 10ticks Website

On Wednesday (22nd June) between 9.00 am and 10.00 am you will have had problems accessing our website. During this time we were uploading our fantastic new look website. (The site was down that evening and early Thursday due to our hosting company having technical problems). If you haven’t been to the website this week you will notice a lot of changes. The whole website has been redeveloped over the last four months by our designers and programmers. We hope you like it. It is better looking and should load faster! It is still split into three distinct areas, Students, Teachers and Parents and all the functionality remains. During next week you may find that as we upload small updates to the website, the service drops in and out. This should settle down by the middle of the week. If you find any problems with the website, such as broken links, please e-mail us (errors@10ticks.co.uk) straight away so we can rectify them. The website is over 10 000 pages in size and although we have taken care to ensure everything works, there may be minor links that have been missed.

Space Shapes

Watch out for a new game in the Games Station 1 called Space Shapes. This targets recognition of basic shapes to their mathematical names, approx level 3 and 4. This will be up in the next week. You will notice the Games Station 1 page has changed – all games can be accessed quickly from the drop down box.

How to skim for a world record

At present the world record for skimming a stone is set at 38 bounces. French scientists from the Institute de Recherche sur les Phenomenes hors Equilibre have studied the art of skimming. A throw involves four factors- the translational and spin velocities, the angle at which the stone heads for the water and the angle at which it hits the water surface. To get near the world record, Christophe Clanet, the head of the team recommends the angle to approach the water is about 20 degrees, spinning at 14 times per second and with a starting speed of 25 mph. Jerdone Coleman-McGhee is the world record holder and passes on these tips: Triangular stones skip best, circular stones are less stable. The lower your hand at release the better. Strength is not the key, quickness is. The faster the stone is spinning the better it will skip. The surface of the stone should be parallel to the water when it hits to achieve maximum bounce. The very finest skipping stones are flat black slate.
