15% is a pass at maths GCSE

Examiners at the Oxford and Cambridge and RSA (OCR) board had to lower the pass mark for Grade C as pupils found this years examination too difficult. It has emerged that candidates were able to achieve a Grade C after scoring only 15% in the examination. As usual it is blamed on the teachers, candidates were expected to have done more algebra than in previous years. One examiner said the problem was that students hadn't been well prepared for the changes.

One student who was well prepared was Arran Fernandez from Surrey. At 8 years old he became the youngest person to receive an A* at GCSE. He took the papers when he was 7 years and 11 months even surpassing Ruth Lawrence who achieved a Grade A at O level when she was 8 years and 10 months. He has now narrowed his career options down to mathematician, lorry driver or space explorer!
