You're Joking!
Having a sense of humour is a prerequisite of the modern day teacher, in and
out of the classroom. Better still, a juvenile sense of humour.
What's pink and fluffy? A bit of pink fluff!
What's blue and fluffy? A bit of pink fluff holding his breath!
Such jokes were the basis of many of my lessons and being able to compile them
into an educational worksheet was sheer unadulterated joy (for me, not the
pupils). There is a significant groan factor required for a joke to be un-cool
enough to be regarded as cool, but here I feel we have achieved just that.
These worksheets are a culmination of many years of groans.
Corny Coordinates 1 is a series of jokes that requires pupils to match the
coordinate to the letter and eventually spell out the words of a joke.
Similarly Translate the Joke! follows a series of translations around the grid
to create the joke.
Pupils then can attempt to make up their own grids and these can be used as
wall displays or as further activity material for the class.
Behind this fun is the serious business of continually trying to motivate
pupils. Some pupils may need to consolidate skills more than others. This kind
of puzzle activity is designed to hide the mathematics behind a reward. Pupils
will be so busy working towards the reward they won't realise the amount of
mathematics being attempted. The reward for good and accurate work in this case
is the joke.
