Translations.
Translation is a fantastic topic to teach! There are so many ways it can be
made interesting. Here are two worksheets on translations, the first is
structured, in so far that it has a set of answers, where as the second is a
game.
In Super Heroes pupils have to shoot aliens by giving the correct vector. The
level of difficulty is designed to be progressive, Super Hero 1 needs vectors
that consist mainly of positive digits. Meanwhile Super Hero 3 needs vectors
that mainly consist of negative digits. Pupils can design their own
game/worksheet. Common themes that pupils consistently pick are Treasure Hunts,
Planet Hopping, Footballers passing to each other on a football pitch, Space
Invaders (using teachers as targets!) etc.
Race Track is a game in which pupils have to negotiate their way around a track
by giving vectors without hitting obstacles. These vectors are drawn onto the
sheet to check that their pathways are clear. Again this is progressive by the
fact only positive digits are needed in the vectors to start off with. (This
game originates from a similar game played as a child. A track drawn out and
pencil placed on the start. By placing one finger on the top of the pencil you
had to push/flick the pencil along the track. The mark the pencil made on the
track was the distance travelled. You restarted where the pencil line ran out.
Alternate goes etc.).
You may wish to turn this game into a Bumper Derby (like the old arcade game
“Tron”). Pupils are not allowed to cross over other cars paths – the idea being
to drive the opposition off the road or into an obstacle! Again, pupils may
want to design their own games and they make great wall display material.
